Race debrief
WHW race - DNF after 131km
This one hurts a fair bit, having to pull out when I was 13th male, sadly the raw reality of ultra racing.
I knew 6 weeks was going to be tight after the UTS but I still wanted to give it a go as getting into the WHW race isn’t easy.
I started well pushing the pace all the way up to 60km then the usual dark spots arrived but I managed to push through them easier than I normally do.
I’ve had issues with my feet healing after Wales but they looked and felt okay over the last week. Carrying some deep fatigue was always going to be risky.
After the devil staircase before descending it was like being hit with a brick. The front balls of my feet felt like they were being stabbed every time I planted, normally the pain comes and goes but this just kept getting worse and worse. I tried heel striking but my ankle ligaments started to flare up with the change in technique. At this point I knew an injury was on the horizon.
I do this sport because I love pushing my body and sadly this is part of the highs and lows. My body simply wasn’t strong enough on the day.
Sometimes you need to fail before you become stronger and I can accept that.
I’ll go away, recover and process what needs improved on and continue to push the boundaries
