Battle plan this year was to build the fitness again after injury. To be honest I never thought I’d actually change that battle plan to racing the last two races like I did.
The game plan was always to go easier to the first climb at Conic then into Balmaha and that’s when I’d start kicking if I felt up for it. Fuelling was absolutely on point and I’ve changed up my water intake too really trying to force more carbs through liquid, I can honestly say it’s the best I’ve felt in a race yet (thanks to @highlandfuelnutrition for their incredible carb/electrolyte powder)
I was managing about 100/110 grams an hour through gels and fluid.
After conic hill I started pressing hard as I knew I’d have a slight advantage on the lochside as the technical stuff I enjoy, climbing from 67th place to 25th over the 20 odd miles along the loch side I felt really in control but avoiding being battered on the loch side is pretty impossible (if you know that section it’s absolutely ruthless)…and then of course the 21 km from Beinglas farm to Tyndrum is called the “rollercoaster” for a reason, bumpy then you get thrown up the side of a hill for one last climb, some minor cramp definitely ripped the sail in the last 5km but up to that everything was managed well.
My plan is to continue to become stronger at this incredible sport.
